Claude Friese-Greene, one of the earliest British pioneers of film, filmed a series of short clips around London documenting major attractions of the city nearly 90 years ago, specifically in 1927, using a primitive color process developed by his father William Friese-Greene.

Looking at this footage almost a century later, it gives an ultimate feeling of precious value, knowing that it was one of the very first colored motion pictures ever made. The father, William Friese-Greene was a British portrait photographer and a well known inventor. His experiments in the field of motion pictures led him to be known as one of the fathers of cinematography.

As described by PetaPixal, One of William’s inventions was an additive color film process known as Biocolour. He exposed every other frame of standard black-and-white film through a different-colored filter, and then stained the resulting monochrome prints either red or green. Once projected, these prints provided an illusion of real color. A process that was used for many films between 1923 and 1943.

In the video below, the British Film Institute used computer enhancement to reduce noticeable flickering that was seen in the original footage, a major downside to the Biocolour method.

1927 London - It’s like a beautiful dusty old postcard you’d find in a junk store, but moving:

He has captured many famous places and events, including Machu Picchu in Peru, The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the Coliseum in Rome, and the Acropolis of Athens. Silver shoots normal photographs and then applies an artificial shallow depth of field to the images using Photoshop during post-processing.

This breathtaking image is a result of composing 25 separate images of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory from April 16, 2012, to April 15, 2013 made by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly where the sun is captured every 12 seconds in 10 different wavelengths. The work presented here is based on a wavelength of 171 angstroms, which is in the extreme ultraviolet range and shows solar material at around 600,000 kelvins (about 1.08 million F). The result image is extremely stable despite the fact that SDO orbits Earth at 6,876 mph and Earth orbits the sun at 67,062 mph.

The images have regularly caught solar flares and coronal mass ejections in the act, types of space weather that can send radiation and solar material toward Earth and interfere with satellites in space. SDO’s glimpses into the violent dance on the sun help scientists understand what causes these giant explosions — with the hopes of some day improving our ability to predict this space weather.

NASA‘s SDO also revealed a video which captures three years of the sun’s activity at a pace of two images per day starting from the spring 2010. There is a slight change in size of the sun during the video due to the distance variations between the SDO spacecraft and the sun.

Today’s Picture of the Day goes to the Boston Magazine brilliant cover with this touching photographed composition of Boston Marathon’s shoes, shaping a negative-space heart in the middle. Inside the heart, a powerful headline reads, “We Will Finish the Race.” photographer Mitchell Feinberg took this aiming to create an iconic photo of the events.

As Boston Magazine editor John Wolfson states,

“To me the cover is about two things: perseverance and unity. By itself, each shoe in the photograph is tiny, battered, and ordinary. Together, though, they create something beautiful, powerful, and inspirational. Remove just one shoe and you begin to diminish, in some small way, the overall effect. Collectively, they are the perfect symbol for Boston, and for our response to the bombings.

“This city is my home. I live in it because I choose to. My love for it is boundless and, at times, irrational. This staff is filled with people who feel the same way. Our home is hurting right now, and our hope, together, was to produce something that reflects the intensity of affection and pride that all of us here in the region feel for Boston.”

The colored shoes are placed in the middle on purpose, to give the feeling that the heart is “almost beating.” Read more of the behind-the-scenes story at Boston Magazine.

A few weeks earlier we posted the official teaser of the time-lapse short film entitled ‘Egypt HD’, along side some of the photos used in the movie that were sent to us by the makers.
Gabr, started traveling and shooting in September 2012, he later joined efforts with Mahmoud Zahran, who together, roamed the country shooting some 50,000 images to create their first ever professional time-lapse.

The movie is primarily aimed at exploring the most amazing and exotic locations in Egypt, in efforts to promote the country’s tourism. The film comes in the perfect timing, specially with tourism in Egypt hitting a record low after the ousting of Mubarak and the instability the country has witnessed over the past 2 years.

There are hundreds of location that I could’ve shot , but due to the country’s situation and that the project is funded from my pocket everything was really limited. I am planning to do a Volume two next year, So I hope this message can reach sponsors or producers so we can make a volume two with more advanced gears and show everyone in the world the beauty of Egypt. Gabr says

Sit back, maximize your screen, turn up the volume and ENJOY!!
