An eye-opening graphical presentation by Michael Markieta, a transportation planner at global engineering and design firm Arup, visualizing the sheer volume of flight paths crossing the globe, and showing the human travel pattern. Markieta used lighter shades of blue to denote shorter and overlapping flights and darker shades for longer flights with little or no overlap. With more than 58,000 flight paths criss-crossing the globe, not surprisingly, bright hotspots appear in areas where many flight paths coincide with the world’s major cities.

Even without a visual map of the world, you can clearly make out all the major continents and countries, and observe one of the typical patterns of human settlement: living in coastal regions.

Displaying 58,000 flight paths becomes difficult when multiple paths overlap, particularly in dense areas such as central Europe and the eastern United States.

The busiest airports by continent include Sao Paulo, Beijing, Sydney, Frankfurt, Cairo and Atlanta.

If the gadget is embraced by users and managed to build an audience base, what would photographers look like using the smart eye-winking camera?!
Google’s latest and most innovative creation, Glass, looks like it’s heading our way as a reality and hitting the shelves very soon. There are already various apps developed for the new smart glasses, including one that can trigger the camera shutter with a wink!

If the gadget is embraced by users and managed to build an audience base, what would photographers look like using the smart eye-winking camera?!

Grovo, in the clip below, offers a humorous look at what photographers would look like if Google Glass becomes widely used as a camera and camcorder.

Grovo describes sarcastically:

Here’s someone you’ll be seeing in a few months: the Google Glass photographer. Nature shots, concerts, time-lapse videos, weddings… the Google Glass photographer does it all.

The 2013 update for New York City’s brings a unique and iconic upgrade. Construction progress of the new World Trade Center complex arrived at one of it’s main milestone marks. With the spire installed in place atop One WTC , it crowned it as the highest building in the western hemisphere - one year exactly after claiming the title for the highest tower in New York.

Soaring at almost 125 meters (408 feet), the spire will elevate the building height to a symbolic (540 meters) 1,776 feet and place it at the 3rd spot of the world’s highest buildings, right after Burj Khalifa of Dubai and Mecca’s Clock Tower in Saudi Arabia – 13th if you don’t count the spire in. The symbolic height of 1776 feet represents the year 1776 of the American Independence.

Claude Friese-Greene, one of the earliest British pioneers of film, filmed a series of short clips around London documenting major attractions of the city nearly 90 years ago, specifically in 1927, using a primitive color process developed by his father William Friese-Greene.

Looking at this footage almost a century later, it gives an ultimate feeling of precious value, knowing that it was one of the very first colored motion pictures ever made. The father, William Friese-Greene was a British portrait photographer and a well known inventor. His experiments in the field of motion pictures led him to be known as one of the fathers of cinematography.

As described by PetaPixal, One of William’s inventions was an additive color film process known as Biocolour. He exposed every other frame of standard black-and-white film through a different-colored filter, and then stained the resulting monochrome prints either red or green. Once projected, these prints provided an illusion of real color. A process that was used for many films between 1923 and 1943.

In the video below, the British Film Institute used computer enhancement to reduce noticeable flickering that was seen in the original footage, a major downside to the Biocolour method.

1927 London - It’s like a beautiful dusty old postcard you’d find in a junk store, but moving:

For 36 years, since 1975, the Brown sisters (Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie) have been taking an annual photo together, standing in the same order, dressing almost similarly, and maintaining the black and white effect. It all commenced when Nicolas Nixon, a world-renowned photography professor at the Massachusetts College of Art originally photographed his wife and her 3 sisters, who at the time ranged in age from 15 to 25.
